PS5 Emulator KytyPS5 Runs XIII at 30 FPS; SharpEmu Runs Demon's Souls at 6 FPS
The race to emulate PlayStation 5 is in full swing, exemplified by the progress made by the KytyPS5 emulator team. This emulator is now capable of running commercial 3D games on PC, displaying real-time graphics, responding to controls, and achieving playable frame rates. The titles used to demonstrate this advancement are XIII and TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants).
While this doesn't mean PCs can yet replace a PS5 or run its major exclusive titles flawlessly, it's important to note that the emulation scene has seen a resurgence following Sony's announcement of the end of physical media. Development groups are now aiming to be ready for significant releases like GTA VI. Before that, however, the focus remains on emulating demanding games such as Demon's Souls, Astro Bot, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
KytyPS5 Achieves 30 FPS in XIII and Around 24 FPS in TMNT
The most notable achievement is with XIII, where the PlayStation 5 version now enters gameplay and runs at approximately 20 to 30 FPS. The emulator renders 3D environments in real-time and correctly registers player input, marking one of the first public demonstrations of a PS5 3D game running beyond menus, introductory videos, or loading screens.
The experience is far from perfect. Many textures fail to load, lighting is often incorrect, and parts of the environments are missing. Although the game responds to controls and can momentarily reach 30 FPS, it's not yet completable in conditions comparable to a console. The hardware used for the demonstration included an Intel Core i5-11400F and a GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, suggesting that higher-end hardware could potentially yield more stable performance.
TMNT exhibits a more consistent graphical presentation, with characters and environments rendered with fewer visible errors. Its performance hovers between 22 and 24 FPS, though the title initially crashes on the first launch. After restarting KytyPS5, gameplay can apparently continue without further crashes. While still not offering a fluid experience, it represents a cleaner demonstration of the progress achieved.
PS5 Emulation is in its Early Stages but Advancing Faster Than Ever
Previously, KytyPS5 had managed to boot games like Grand Theft Auto V, but this primarily involved displaying videos, menus, and configuration options. The execution of XIII and TMNT signifies that the emulator can now process 3D graphics, accept controller input, and maintain gameplay for a certain duration. Other titles, such as Paleo Pines and Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, have also begun to display visuals, though they currently run at extremely low frame rates.
The developers themselves acknowledge that KytyPS5 remains in its initial phase, with low compatibility, graphical issues, crashes, and poor performance. The project is written in C++, utilizes the Vulkan 1.3 graphics API, and is primarily tested on Windows 11, although versions for Linux and experimental support for macOS are also available. The current priority is clearly Windows. It can currently boot some games developed with Unreal Engine 4 and 5, Unity, and other proprietary engines.
Concurrently, another significant contender is SharpEmu. This second PS5 emulator, developed from scratch in C#, focuses on accuracy, GPU command synchronization, Vulkan image transitions, and texture management. While KytyPS5 currently leads in public demonstrations, both projects are still a long way from offering widespread compatibility. However, a recent development shows SharpEmu is now capable of launching Demon's Souls, albeit at a mere 6 FPS, on a GeForce RTX 4060 with minimal CPU utilization. This is further hampered by missing textures and an overlapping interface.
This milestone is crucial for the preservation and study of Sony's hardware. Logically, a fully functional emulator might still be years away. However, with AI models like Claude working alongside developers, Sony could face an unexpected challenge much sooner than anticipated. Leveraging AI is expected to significantly shorten the development timelines for these emulators, potentially by months or even years.
